Alba is the fourth largest aluminium smelter globally, located in Askar, Bahrain, producing an average of 850,000 metric tons of aluminium per year for the past three years. Alba commenced commercial operations in May 1971 as the first aluminium smelter in the Middle East and has now grown into one of the leading producers of primary aluminium in the world.
In mid-2010 Mumtalakat undertook an initial public offering of ten percent of its shareholding in Alba in the form of Ordinary Shares and GDRs on the Bahrain and London Stock Exchanges respectively.
Our client, Mumtalakat requested that we work alongside the communications firm Bell Pottinger to undertake the marketing and communication of this complex transaction, to encourage the people of Bahrain to participate in the IPO. This was the first dual listing in the region, and a great opportunity for potential investors.
Alba already played a significant role in the Kingdom’s economy through scale and contribution to GDP. The listing on the Bahrain Bourse represented a contribution to the national economy towards the development and liquidity of the stock exchange.
True to its values, Mumtalakat encouraged the people of Bahrain to share the wealth through a wide marketing campaign. Our campaign of themed messaging, announcements, press advertisements and results was published in both Arabic and English and delivered by Interstate, over an intense period of four weeks. This made our involvement integral in this highly sensitive, but ultimately, very successful initiative.
