Silverstone, widely regarded as one of the world's most historic and challenging tracks, was looking past its best and needed rejuvenating. With the prospect of potentially losing the British Grand Prix, and instigated by Bernie Ecclestone, the circuit realised it needed to improve its aesthetic appeal to ensure it was still able to attract substantial crowds and live up to the panache of Formula 1.
