In celebration of F1's 60th season, the Bahrain International Circuit organised and hosted a spectacular event at Sakhir which doubled as the inaugural Grand Prix of 2010. Central to the concept was the reunion of as many world championship winning machines and all of those surviving Formula 1 World Champions as possible. It was almost a full-house with only Nelson Piquet (1981 and 1983) and Kimi Raikkonen (2007) unable to attend.

To memorialise the Formula 1 diamond anniversary celebrations, Interstate was commissioned to create a printed record that could be presented as a gift and momento to all those involved in the event.

Our concept, inspired by the design of great art books, focuses on beautifully edited imagery, aesthetic layouts, and elegant and decorative Arabic and Latin typography, all of which graphically embrace the occasion. We married photography from the sport's halcyon days with modern digital images shot over the weekend to form a retrospective of the sport and an account of the three days that showcased 60 years of Formula 1. The book's narrative also touched on the history of the Bahrain circuit and how the Gulf state became the first promoter of a Grand Prix in the region. The book closes with a journey back through time documenting every FIA Formula 1 World Championship winning driver from 2009 - Jenson Button - to the first Champion - Alberto Ascari - in 1950.

With photography so critical to the book's success world recognised celebrity photographer, Terry O'Neill, was appointed to capture the events and happenings of the weekend. Terry had made his name in the 60s photographing Hollywood greats and rock stars like Keith Richards, Rod Stewart and Eric Clapton and, as a longtime friend of Bernie Ecclestone, was a frequent observer of F1 races over the decades. His pictures uniquely capture the joy experienced by so many past champions and team owners reunited with some quite remarkable engineering in the historic Grand Prix cars.

A limited edition of sixty numbered versions were presented to VIP’s as gifts - one copy for each year Formula 1™ has been in operation - complete with six photographic prints of the event exclusively signed by Terry O'Neill. A die-stamped 'authenticity' page was bound into the front of the book, and each book and set of prints are encased in a unique presentation box.

It was a gathering which had never been seen before and, in all likelihood, will never be seen again.
